NewsGlobal CD sales slump in 2006Global CD sales have slumped more last year than had been expected, according to an industry reports. The International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI) said sales in 2006 dropped to 1.7bn, compared with 1.9bn in 2005. Although digital music sales doubled last year, they failed to compensate for the overall fall in music sales. IFPI chairman John Kennedy said he hoped the CD sales decline would have been offset by more increases in digital sales. Kennedy told BBC News: "While digital sales have grown as expected, physical sales have fallen by more than expected. "Unfortunately this trend has continued in 2007. Physical sales continues top drop at a faster pace than we hoped for, particularly in the US and now also in the UK." However, Kennedy predicted that digital sales could grow by a further 50 per-cent this year. Illegal downloads are not included in the figures but it is thought that there are 20 illegal downloads for every one legal download worldwide. Kennedy insisted that "music is more popular than ever" but claims the recording industry is suffering because of piracy issues including CD copying. Kennedy is calling on the government and internet service providers to help curb the spread of piracy and said the industry is investing "heavily" in consumer education and the enforcement of its rights. The Killers gear up for US outing The Killers are set to hit the road in the US and Canada with their second outing to support 'Sam's Town'. The band will kick off the tour in Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Colorado and will visit several mid-west and southern cities, with a quick step into Canada for the Virgin Festival. Having recently become a dadddy, Brandon Flowers will soon resume work with his band with the release of their new single 'Read My Mind' for which they recently shot a video. |
